Oh what a champ. So he can even calmly let you know when he's had enough. Brilliant.

Bengie @ Hexham Priory School - Week 6

We are well settled into a routine now and Bengie's visits are looked forward to by so many of the children that, as one staff member put it, 'We could do with a Bengie in residence!'

I'd love to do another day but Bengie is quite elderly and it is tiring for him. I think it best to do fewer, quality hours. I am quite in awe of those who visit multiple venues and multiple times a week. That's one hell of a commitment.

J (the little boy who was so enamoured with Bengie last week) got really excited when we went into his classroom. He could hardly wait for Bengie to be introduced to the rest of the class and when we told him he could walk Bengie around the classroom and out into the play area he was delighted. If you could see his face as he walks Bengie. It is a picture of delight.

You're both doing enough. Once a week is much better than not at all. If he was there all the time, they may even get bored and we can't have that!

Week 7 - not a lot to report this week

We continue to see the same group of children either one on one or in a class group. Bengie's visits are looked forwared to all week and on the day there is a lot of excitement in anticipation of the allocated time slot.

Something new: treats. Some of the children are allowed to give Bengie a treat. First of all they are encouraged to say "Bengie sit" then to offer him a biscuit and say "Gently." At this point Bengie takes the offered treat so tenderly. Smiles all round.

He's actually a cross between a Black Lab and a Golden Retriever (notice the bridfled legs in the photo above?)

But yes, I am a complete sucker for a black lab - every time.

Bengie @ Hexham Priory School - Week 8

Q. How many children does it take to walk a dog?

A. Four. At least that's how many wanted to walk Bengie at the same time, this week. It was great fun if a little crowded. We also had a bit of a first with one boy who, previously, had been distracted by other things in the Parents' Room where we meet. This time he sat down and stroked and groomed Bengie. Great engagement H!

What a lovely thing to do Paul with your dog.

I think our Harvey would have been very suitable for that job - I just never thought of it.
Now he's fourteen and a half, going deaf with cataracts, and an extremely smelly character, but he still
has the sweetest nature, gentle, placid, non aggressive and just loves humans.

Paul,
I love this thread! Benjie sounds wonderful. I think the non-verbalness of dogs is a great balm to some children.
Gogs, my Norfolk terrier Frankie sounds just like your Harvey. That's him to the left. He's had bladder cancer for over a year, and the grim reaper is standing over him with the scythe but Frankie's not paying any attention. He's always been greedy, so when he was diagnosed, I let him eat sausages, since he was not long for this world. A year later, he's still pottering about and is the size of a house. He and I are both are on tramadol, the difference is I am also on red wine!

Yes a calm nature is essential. Bengie is getting a little old now too (12 1/4) so we are limiting him to one visit per week. It's very tiring for him, he sleeps like a log when he gets home

Hi Helen,

Your Frankie sounds just wonderful, guess he just rolls around all day!!!
Our pets are such wonderful additions to the family, although Harvey sleeping on my
side of the bed every night is a bit pongyRollEyes He's full of arthritis and to watch him
struggling at times to get up is heartbreaking, sometimes he just paces around because he
literally doesn't know where to put himself. I was warned by the vet NOT to give him NSAIDS every
day as this might cause problems in his stomach - but I don't like what I see because he really could do with them.

Give a hug to Frankie for me, if I was near I'd bring him a pound of sausagesBigGrin

Bengie @ Hexham Priory School - Week 9

We had to turn up early this week to talk to the local newspaper so the kids were still in the playground when we arrived. You should have heard the excited calls of 'Hello Bengie!' as we walked past the fence. Even kids who we don't see during our sessions were calling out BigGrin

So, yes the local newspaper. They contacted our area coordinator about doing a feature on the local activity of the PAT organisation. So we had a chat about Bengie and his work, and they took loads of photos of the good ol' boy doing his stuff. J, an autistic non-verbal boy who adores Bengie and loves taking him for walks, was asked whether he would walk him while the photographer snapped away. Needless to say he needed no prompting.

The article will appear in a quarterly features magazine that will be out in June. I am going to talk to our local Waitrose to see if we can get PAT to be one their green token charities at the same time to see if we can raise some much needed funds for them.
